Dr. JacobsonCelebrating 25 Years of Veterinary Care in Marshalltown

June 2024 marks a major milestone for Dr. Grant Jacobson, owner and operator of The Hometown Veterinarian. With 25 years of service to the pets and families of Marshalltown, Dr. Jacobson is celebrating this incredible achievement with an open house at the hospital on Friday, June 28, from 4 to 6 p.m.

A Journey Home

Dr. Jacobson’s roots in the Marshalltown area run deep. A native of Ferguson and a graduate of Iowa State University’s veterinary program, he and his wife Jami, an MHS alum, dreamed of returning to central Iowa to serve their community. That dream became a reality in 1999 when an opportunity arose to relocate from Minnesota and work at Animal Clinic — The Vet.

After years of providing high-quality care there, Dr. Jacobson took the leap to establish his own practice in 2018. The Hometown Veterinarian, located at 101 Iowa Avenue West, has grown significantly since its inception, nearly doubling in size and expanding its staff to include four additional veterinarians.

The Evolution of Veterinary Medicine

Over the last 25 years, Dr. Jacobson has witnessed remarkable changes in veterinary medicine. He recalls the release of the first labeled pain reliever for dogs in 1997, the year he graduated. This development marked a turning point, as pain relief shifted from being an afterthought to a standard expectation in animal care.

Dr. Jacobson has also seen a cultural shift in how pets are treated within families. Once relegated to barns or doghouses, many pets now live as cherished family members, often sleeping in the same beds as their owners. Advances in flea control have helped enable this change, creating a healthier and more integrated lifestyle for pets.

“Fundamentally, most pet owners now expect the same level of care for their pets as they would want for their children,” he notes—a principle central to the mission of The Hometown Veterinarian.

Reflecting on 25 Years

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Jacobson recalls a lesson from his veterinary ethics class: veterinarians are part of the only medical profession where they will care for their patients from birth to death, often several times over. This unique connection to pets and their families is something he holds close to his heart.

Looking Ahead

As he celebrates this significant milestone, Dr. Jacobson is looking to the future. One of his long-term goals is to establish a 24-hour emergency service, a resource the community greatly needs. While staffing challenges remain, Dr. Jacobson is committed to continuing to provide the exceptional care that has been the hallmark of his practice for the past 25 years.
