Ulric JacobsonJoy, the Armistice is on! Honoring Veteran’s Day: 100 Years Since the End of WWI

Today, on November 11, 2018, we pause to honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women who served to protect the freedoms we hold dear. This year marks a century since the Armistice was signed, ending World War I, a conflict that reshaped the world.

For us at The Hometown Veterinarian, this day is deeply personal as we reflect on the service of Ulric Jacobson, Dr. Jacobson’s grandfather. Ulric served in Company B, 1st Battalion, 55th Infantry, 13th Brigade, 7th Division, and arrived in France in August 1918.

Excerpts From Ulric Jacobson’s Diary

Ulric’s own words provide a glimpse into the final days of the Great War:

Sunday, November 10, 1918:
Two men lying next to me were wounded by a bullet when a machine gun opened fire on our company as we advanced out of a grove. The Germans used a fierce barrage to stop our advance. We pulled back to the town of Jaulny, about three miles from the front.

Monday, November 11, 1918:
Joy, the Armistice is on. I came off the front today. Got lost from the Company last night. They ceased firing at 11 a.m. today.

Personal Reflections

Dr. Jacobson has often reflected on his grandfather’s words and the close call that day. Ulric described how the men lying to his left and right were struck by bullets, leaving Dr. Jacobson to contemplate just how different his family’s history might have been if the machine gun fire had landed just a few feet over. It’s a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the sacrifices made by those who served on the front lines.

A Legacy to Remember

Ulric Jacobson’s service is a reminder of the resilience and bravery of those who endured the unimaginable to bring peace to the world. Today, we honor him and all veterans who have served, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

On this centennial of the Armistice, let us reflect on the importance of their contributions and strive to uphold the values they fought to protect.
