THVLongtime Local Veterinarian Opens Family-Owned Clinic

When The Hometown Veterinarian opens its doors in October 2018, marking a new chapter for Dr. Grant Jacobson, a familiar face in veterinary medicine for the Marshalltown area since 1999. As a family-owned clinic led by Dr. Jacobson and his wife Jami, the hospital has a vision of providing high-quality care with a hometown feel.

Building a Vision

After a change in ownership at his previous workplace, Dr. Jacobson decided it was time to venture out on his own. Together with Jami, he began transforming an empty 5,000-square-foot space, previously home to the Dollar Tree, into a welcoming and modern veterinary hospital. With the help of their team, they created an environment that was not only functional but also comfortable for pets, clients, and staff alike.

“We really have strived to make it a comfortable place for pets, clients, and staff,” Jami shared during the initial opening. “And we have separate areas for cats and dogs.”

Services Designed for Marshalltown’s Pets

Dr. Jacobson’s vision included offering high-quality care that wouldn’t require families to leave town for advanced treatments. From wellness exams to critical care, surgeries, and orthopedic procedures, the clinic is committed to being a trusted resource for the community. The facility also includes an in-house pharmacy and advanced technology, including a blood machine like those used by the Mayo Clinic, which served as inspiration for the hospital’s design and workflow.

Community-Centered Care

The Hometown Veterinarian has a mission to make pet care personal. With Jami managing the office, the hospital is a family affair, deeply connected to the community. As Dr. Jacobson noted at the time of opening, "Our family is here, and this is where we want to be."
